What is an AI vending machine? Most of the time it means an AI smart cooler: a locked, refrigerated cabinet where you tap a card or phone, open the door, take what you want, and cameras with AI product recognition charge you only for what you took. The term is also used for touchscreen kiosks with “smart” software, and since 2025 for experiments where an AI agent runs a small shop. AI smart coolers listed on Smart Cooler Supply start at $2,999 (October 2026), plus shipping and a monthly software fee.
This page sorts out what people mean by the term, how the camera-based machines work, what they cost, how they compare with a traditional vending machine and who should (and should not) buy one. If you want the deep dive on the cooler itself, read what an AI smart cooler is and how a sale works.

Three things people call an “AI vending machine”
The phrase gets used for very different machines. Before you compare prices or read news stories, know which one you are looking at.
| What it is | Where the “AI” is | What the customer does | Covered on this site? |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI smart cooler (camera-based) | Cameras and computer vision work out which products left the shelf | Taps a card or phone, opens the door, takes items, closes the door | Yes. This is what most operators mean, and what HAHA and Vendera make. |
| Kiosk or traditional machine with smart features | Software such as touchscreens, product suggestions or sales reporting | Picks an item on a screen or keypad; the machine delivers it | Only for comparison. The “AI” label means different things from seller to seller, so ask what it actually does. |
| AI agent running a shop | A language model decides prices, stock and replies to customers | Buys from a small self-checkout shop the agent manages | Explained below. It is a research experiment, not a product you can buy. |
When someone searches “AI smart vending machine,” “AI vending machine business” or “how much is an AI vending machine,” they almost always mean the first row. The rest of this guide is about that machine.
How a camera-based AI vending machine works
The flow is the same idea as paying at the pump, then shopping.
- Tap to unlock. The customer taps or inserts a card, or taps a phone. The machine places a temporary hold (a pre-authorization) on the card, then unlocks the door. HAHA describes the hold as a temporary hold to confirm the card has funds, and says the bank releases it, usually within 7 days depending on the bank.
- Grab what you want. The customer opens the door and takes one item or several.
- Close the door. Closing the door ends the visit.
- The AI works out what was taken. Downward-facing cameras record the shelves. The software matches what left the cooler against the operator’s product list.
- Final charge. The card is charged only for the items taken.
Two points matter for anyone thinking of owning one. First, the cameras do the work. The HAHA and Vendera coolers we cover identify products with cameras and AI. Second, recognition is not perfect. Sessions the AI cannot settle are flagged for the operator to review, so plan a few minutes a day to check your app. The full step-by-step, including what happens with flagged sessions, is in our AI smart cooler explainer.
HAHA and Vendera AI vending machines
These are the two brands we teach on and that our sister company sells. Both use the same basic camera-and-card approach. The hardware details differ.
| HAHA | Vendera | |
|---|---|---|
| Cameras | Downward-facing cameras | Two downward-facing cameras at the top |
| Shelving | No permanent adjustable shelf locks | Roller shelving with adjustable shelf locks |
| Door reinforcement | 24″ anti-theft door reinforcement | Full-length anti-theft door reinforcement |
| Models | Single-door, double-door and freezer options (see hahavending.com) | Core LC-510 (single door), Atlas LC-1160 (double door), Arctic LD-315 (freezer) |
| Card reader | Included and pre-installed on the coolers Smart Cooler Supply sells | |
| Age-restricted products | HAHA says age verification is not currently enabled | Check with the maker before planning any age-restricted product |
| Outdoor use | HAHA says its machines are splash-resistant but not fully waterproof | Plan for indoor placement |

How much does an AI vending machine cost?
As listed on Smart Cooler Supply in October 2026, a HAHA AI cooler costs $2,999 to $7,299 and a Vendera AI cooler costs $3,649 to $6,449, before shipping. Prices change, so check the current listing before you budget.
| Cost | HAHA | Vendera |
|---|---|---|
| Machine (range) | $2,999 (Mini 360) to $7,299 (Ultra 1200 Dual Temp) | $3,649 (Core LC-510) to $6,449 (Atlas LC-1160) |
| Shipping, continental US | $350 single-door, $400 double-door (Alaska and Hawaii by quote) | |
| Monthly software fee | $40 per cooler | $40 per cooler |
| Card processing | 5.95% of each sale, plus $0.05 per transaction | 5.85% of each sale, plus $0.22 per debit transaction |
| Financing | Available through Affirm; approval, rates and terms are set by Affirm | |
The machine is only part of the bill. You also need opening inventory, any business registration and permits where you live, insurance, a way to move product and the time to restock. AI vending machine vs traditional vending machine
An AI cooler is not automatically better. It is better at some things and worse at others.
| AI smart cooler | Traditional spiral machine | |
|---|---|---|
| How you buy | Tap, open the door, take, close | Choose a slot, pay, the item drops |
| Items per visit | One or many | Usually one per vend |
| Product shapes | Most packaged items, including bottles, cups and boxed meals | Limited to what fits and drops from a coil |
| Payment | Cashless only | Depends on the machine; many can be set up for cash and cards |
| Connection | Needs power and a reliable data connection to sell | Can run without a connection if it takes cash |
| Sales data | Real-time sales and stock in the operator app | Depends on whether telemetry is added |
| Daily admin | Review flagged sessions and refund requests | Cash handling and jams, if it takes cash |
Where AI coolers have the edge
- Customers can pick up several items at once, which suits lunch and grab-and-go food.
- You are not limited to products that fit a coil.
- The door stays locked until a card is approved.
- Live sales data helps you restock what sells and cut what does not.
Where AI coolers fall short
- No cash. Where many customers pay in cash, you lose those sales.
- No connection, no sales. Check signal or network at the exact spot.
- Card holds confuse some customers, and some will ask for refunds.
- No alcohol or tobacco on HAHA, since age verification is not enabled.

Is an AI vending machine business right for you?
An AI vending business is a small retail business. You find a location, place a cooler, stock it, price it and keep it running. The AI handles checkout. It does not find locations, buy product or restock shelves.
It can fit you if
- You can afford the startup cost and could absorb losing it.
- You are willing to ask businesses for a placement and follow up.
- You have time each week to buy product, restock and clean, or a budget to pay someone who does.
- You like using data to adjust what you stock and what you charge.
Think twice if
- You need the income right away.
- You want to buy the machine first and look for a location later.
- You expect passive income. Nothing is passive unless a manager is in place. Vending becomes passive only when a route manager or route stocker does the work, and their pay comes out of the profit.
The common starting points are offices, gyms, apartment buildings, warehouses and campuses, but the specific site matters more than the category. The AI that ran a vending shop: Project Vend
In 2025 you may have seen headlines about an “AI vending machine” that lost money and gave away snacks. That was a different kind of AI.
In June 2025, Anthropic published Project Vend. Working with the AI safety company Andon Labs, it let its Claude model, nicknamed “Claudius,” run a small shop in its San Francisco office for about a month. The “machine” was a small refrigerator, some stackable baskets and an iPad for self-checkout. The AI chose what to stock, set prices, contacted suppliers and answered customers over Slack. People did the physical restocking. Anthropic reported that the shop did not make money. The AI sold some items below cost and was talked into discounts.
In December 2025, Anthropic published a second phase. It used newer models, better tools and a second AI agent acting as a “CEO.” Anthropic said weeks with negative profit margins were largely eliminated, and the shop expanded to New York and London. Anthropic also let Wall Street Journal reporters test the setup in their newsroom. The reporters found ways to get free items. The Journal’s story ran under the headline “We Let AI Run Our Office Vending Machine. It Lost Hundreds of Dollars.”
What this means for you: those experiments tested whether an AI agent can manage a business. A camera-based smart cooler does something much narrower. Its AI recognizes products and charges the right amount. You, the operator, still decide what to stock, what to charge and where to place it.
Where to buy an AI vending machine
Buy only after a location has said yes. The location decides which size and type of cooler you need. Then check current HAHA and Vendera prices and buying options at Smart Cooler Supply. Smart Cooler Supply is our sister company, and we earn money on the sale. Every cooler bought there includes one free Annual Vending Business 101 membership for the first year. That free year does not renew or charge.
FAQ
What is an AI vending machine?
Usually an AI smart cooler: a locked fridge you unlock with a card or phone. You take what you want, and cameras with AI charge you for the items you took.
How much is an AI vending machine?
On Smart Cooler Supply in October 2026, HAHA coolers listed at $2,999 to $7,299 and Vendera at $3,649 to $6,449, plus $350 or $400 shipping and $40 a month in software.
How does an AI vending machine know what I took?
Downward-facing cameras record the shelves during your visit. When the door closes, the software matches what is missing to the operator’s product list and charges your card.
Is an AI vending machine business passive income?
No. Someone has to find locations, buy product, restock, clean and handle refunds. It becomes passive only when a paid route manager or stocker does that work.
Is the HAHA AI vending machine the same as the Vendera one?
Same idea, different hardware. Vendera has two top cameras, roller shelving with adjustable shelf locks and full-length door reinforcement. HAHA has downward-facing cameras and 24″ door reinforcement.
Was the WSJ AI vending machine a smart cooler?
No. It was Anthropic’s Project Vend, an experiment in which an AI agent managed a small shop. A smart cooler’s AI only recognizes products at checkout.
