What are the most profitable vending machines? No machine type is the most profitable everywhere. Profit comes from the location and the product mix: how many people buy, how much they spend per visit, what you keep per item, and what it costs you in labor, fees and theft. Formats that allow bigger purchases, such as micro markets and AI smart coolers, show higher average tickets in industry payment data, but they only pay off where there are enough buyers.
This guide compares snack, drink, combo, AI smart cooler, micro market and specialty machines by the things that actually drive profit. It uses published industry data where it exists. It does not quote revenue per machine, because no honest source can tell you what your location will do.

The five things that decide vending machine profit
- Ticket size. How much a customer spends per purchase. A machine that sells one item at a time has a lower ceiling than one where a customer can take several items or a meal.
- Product margin. Price minus your cost, per item. Margin varies by product and supplier, so track your own cost per item.
- Labor. Every restock, cleaning, refund and repair is time. Fresh food needs more frequent visits than shelf-stable snacks.
- Theft and shrink. Product that leaves without being paid for, or that expires. Open shelves carry more risk than a locked machine.
- Location fit. Enough people, with a reason to buy, at the right times. The best machine in the wrong place loses money.
Fees and the machine’s purchase price sit on top of these. Card processing, monitoring software and any location commission come off every sale. Read vending machine commission rates before you agree to one.
Vending machine types compared by profit drivers
Ticket figures below are network-wide averages from Cantaloupe’s 2026 Micropayment Trends Report, which covers 2025 payments on its system in the US and Canada. They are averages across many locations, not what any one machine will do.
| Type | Ticket size | Product and margin | Labor | Theft and shrink | Best location fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Snack machine | One item per vend; vending averaged $2.01 per transaction in 2025 | Shelf-stable, low spoilage | Lower: long shelf life | Low: product behind glass | Smaller sites with steady traffic |
| Drink machine | One item per vend; same vending average | Cold drinks; needs power and cooling | Lower to moderate; heavy product to carry | Low | Hot work areas, gyms, outdoor-adjacent sites |
| Combo machine | One item per vend | Snacks and drinks in one footprint, fewer of each | Moderate: sells out faster | Low | Small sites that cannot justify two machines |
| AI smart cooler | Several items per visit; Cantaloupe’s grab-and-go Smart Store format averaged $4.49 | Drinks, snacks, fresh food, frozen (with a freezer model) | Moderate; fresh food adds visits | Locked until payment; cameras track items taken | Break rooms, gyms, apartments, offices with no food on site |
| Micro market | Self-checkout store; averaged $3.02 | Widest range, including fresh food | Higher: more products to stock and rotate | Open shelves; operators surveyed believed shrink runs 3% to 5% | Larger workplaces with secure access |
| Specialty (coffee, frozen, non-food) | Varies by product | Depends on the niche | Varies | Varies | Only where a specific need exists |
Two more data points from the same report: card and phone payments averaged $2.45 per vending transaction in 2025, against $1.57 for cash, and 78% of vending sales were cashless. That gap is one reason a card reader matters on any machine type.
Why ticket size matters so much
Illustrative example — replace with your own numbers. Say you want $500 a month of gross margin from one machine and your product cost is 50% of the price. This ignores fees, labor and commission, which come off later. Using Cantaloupe’s network-average tickets:
| Average ticket | Margin per purchase at 50% | Purchases a month for $500 |
|---|---|---|
| $2.01 (vending average, 2025) | $1.005 | about 498 |
| $3.02 (micro market average, 2025) | $1.51 | about 332 |
| $4.49 (Smart Store average, 2025) | $2.245 | about 223 |
A bigger ticket means fewer purchases to reach the same margin. That is the main reason operators look at smart coolers and micro markets. But a bigger ticket does not create buyers. If the site only has 60 people, no format will produce 500 purchases. The full cost picture, with fees and labor, is in are vending machines profitable? See our earnings disclaimer.
Each vending machine type up close
Snack machines
Snack machines sell shelf-stable items one at a time. Long shelf life means fewer wasted products and flexible restock timing. The trade-off is a low ticket: each sale is usually a single item. They make the most sense where traffic is steady and space is tight.
Drink machines
Cold drinks sell where people are thirsty: warehouses, plants, gyms and job sites. Drinks are heavy to carry, so restocking takes more effort per dollar than snacks. Like snacks, they sell one item per vend.
Combo machines
A combo puts snacks and drinks in one cabinet. That helps a small site that cannot justify two machines. With fewer slots for each, popular items sell out faster, which can mean more trips.
AI smart coolers
An AI smart cooler is a refrigerated cabinet that stays locked until the customer taps a card or phone. The customer opens the door, takes what they want and is charged for what the cameras see them take. Because a customer can grab a drink, a snack and a meal in one visit, the ticket can be larger than one vend. Cantaloupe’s own grab-and-go format, which it calls Smart Stores, had the highest average ticket in its 2026 report at $4.49. That is Cantaloupe’s product, not the HAHA or Vendera coolers we cover, but it is the same kind of open-door, multi-item purchase.
Smart coolers are cashless by design, so card and platform fees apply to every sale. Smart Cooler Supply, our sister company, lists $40 a month plus 5.95% and $0.05 per transaction for HAHA, and $40 a month plus 5.85% (with $0.22 per debit transaction) for Vendera. Listed prices run from $2,999 to $7,299 for HAHA and $3,649 to $6,449 for Vendera, before shipping, as of October 30, 2026. We earn money if you buy there. Fresh food raises the ticket but also raises spoilage risk and restock visits, so start small with it. Read what an AI smart cooler is and what to stock in a smart cooler.
Micro markets
365 Retail Markets describes micro markets as “self-checkout convenience stores that offer a variety of fresh food, beverage and snack options.” Cantaloupe reports a 2025 average ticket of $3.02, and nearly 96% of micro market sales were cashless in 2024. The catch is open shelves. A 2023 Vending Market Watch article cited the 2022 Automatic Merchandiser State of the Industry report: most operators believe their micro market shrink is 3% to 5%. The same article quoted a security vendor who had seen losses of 25%, 30% or even 50% in some situations. Micro markets need a secure, controlled space and more stocking work. 365 says there is no recommended employee minimum, but the site still has to have enough buyers to cover the extra product and labor.
Specialty machines
Coffee, frozen food, personal care and other niche machines can work where there is a clear, specific need, such as a frozen treat at a pool or supplies in an apartment building. Cantaloupe’s 2025 report notes operators stocking items like fresh food, toilet paper and laundry detergent in newer locations such as apartment buildings and fitness centers. Specialty machines are a bet on one niche, so prove the demand before you buy one.

Most profitable vending machines FAQ
What type of vending machine makes the most money?
The one that fits its location. Formats that allow multi-item purchases, like smart coolers and micro markets, show higher average tickets in Cantaloupe’s data, but profit still depends on how many people buy and your costs.
Are smart coolers more profitable than vending machines?
They can be at sites with enough buyers for larger, multi-item purchases. They also carry monthly software and card fees on every sale. Compare both with your own numbers.
Are micro markets more profitable than vending machines?
They have a higher average ticket ($3.02 vs $2.01 for vending in 2025, per Cantaloupe), but more stocking work and open-shelf theft risk. They suit larger, secure workplaces.
Which vending products have the best margin?
It depends on your supplier costs and prices. Track cost per item and margin for every product, and drop slow sellers.
How much does a vending machine make per month?
